On the WHBFD Website I see that they operate with FDNY alot and in this link they posted http://www.whbvfd.org/news/fullstory/newsid/101126 , It says they were Special Called to A Brush Fire by Battalion 39 , Is that true ? Are they assigned to boxes by the FDNY ? Or do they just show up ?

I believe that they have voice-alarm within their quarters as does Richmond Engine (Vol.) on Staten Island. They respond to certain "boxes" within the geographical area that they are located in. The reason for the "special call" was probably for a "stump-jumper" or some other type of off road apparatus that was not near or readily available from FDNY resources.

Most of the time, they just show up. The FDNY brush rigs usually can't get into a lot of the spots where the fires are over there. I'm going by my experiences, and from buffing a few fires over there myself.
