This week, FDNY Fire Inspectors in conjunction with FDNY Fire Marshals and Fire Operations seized 102 flammable propane tanks and approximately 50 gallons of gasoline from a facility located at 66 Seabring Street in Brooklyn.
“When we pulled up, we noticed a couple of propane cylinders on the sidewalk, upon further inspection we found large tarps covering a large quantity of propane outside the structure and blocking egress doors. We also discovered additional propane cylinders inside the commercial building. We requested Fire Operations and our Fire Marshals to assist in confiscating these cylinders and containers. These propane cylinders can cause a huge risk to not only the public but also first responders when they are illegally stored. In the event of a leaking cylinder propane gas pools in low places, it can get into an open vent, into a cellar, find a lit pilot light and cause a tremendous explosion. In large quantities it can also be an asphyxiating gas like carbon monoxide. So, by removing the hazard we are protecting the community members who live and work around this building and our Firefighters who may have to respond to this address for a fire,” said FDNY Fire Protection Inspector Michael Chorman, who along with FDNY Fire Protection Inspector Alberto Romero, discovered a dangerous amount of illegally stored propane and gasoline in a Brooklyn business.
