Why the Bronx Burned

G-man, we both remember those days. Alot of people lost their few belongings and many people suffered during those busy years. Plus the guys that got hurt, or worse fighting those fires. But a the saying goes: "history repeats itself". I sure hope not though. I guess we'll soon find out.

For the FDNY it was their most Historic time for fires. But it was also the Most Historic time for cutting the most fire companies anybody had ever seen. Not just in NY but in ANY City.

"As the city?s budget deficit ballooned, the RAND studies were used to close dozens more companies; in all, 50 fire units were shuttered or moved. "

Anybody have the list of houses that were shuttered or moved?

I was at the city council meeting on the cuts today and the council members as well as myself are furious at cASSano. Although he wasn't able to tell much, It seems as though the council is deadset against closings, which is a good thing seeing as how they played a major factor in keeping them open last year.

It seemed as thought the unofficial motto of that era was "Do more with less".

How many times did we hear dispatchers ask if there were any available units in the 6th or 15th Divisions (depending on where you hung out or rode) only to hear silence. Or companies asking for the assignment to be filled out and the reply was "we're trying"

Busy times that will never be repeated, BUT the current administration would do will to learn from the past.

Yep. I remember hearing old audio from that time period.....Bronx radio: "your closest available Tower Ladder is Ladder 9 act. 26 and they're on their way up" and "Bronx to Squad 5, go to 2162 you're going in as a Truck, we have no Trucks available in the South Bronx area, you're going in as a Truck"

I can remember arriving at box's and finding fully involved vacant H type buildings with no units on the scene. They would wind up using 2 Eng's & 2 TL's (10-30 sig. 2X2) because no other units were available, plus the BC did not want to get the DC involved.

I remember those nights too Mike. 2 and 2 going to work on a five brick, fully involved. Then Another Job a few blocks away, as the dispatchers scraped to find companies for that.
That's where as Dean O says: "Squad 5, you're going to work as a Truck, we have no Trucks available in the South Bronx".
I remember the 10-30 signal for using 2 + 2. Some of those jobs would be Third Alarms today.
