Absolutely beautiful old church. As a student at Power Memorial Academy (right around the corner) we used St Paul's as our chapel.Thank God they saved it. Another great job by the FDNY.

Founded in 1858. I am a member of this parish as I have an apartment across the street which I use part time. This is the Mother Church of the Paulist Fathers. Several of them including the pastor can be seen in the video above.

Update on Yesterday Evening's Fire
74fabf99-5624-4beb-a2db-92686c3b58c4.jpg

Dear Friends,

Last night around 9pm, I discovered smoke in the Church caused by a fire in the South Bell Tower. The 75-year-old wooden statue of St. Anthony of Padua caught fire. This was most likely started by an inexpensive, glass votive candle purchased elsewhere that may have been placed at the foot of the statue. The feast day of St. Anthony was on Friday, June 13.

The Fire Department was immediately contacted. They responded in moments, extinguished the fire quickly, and made sure that the Parish Center and Paulist Fathers Motherhouse were safe. There were no injuries. The fire fighters were professional, sensitive to protecting the Church, and tireless from start to finish.

There is serious but not catastrophic smoke and water damage in the South Bell Tower. It will be closed indefinitely so a thorough investigation can be conducted, and the damage can be addressed. This investigation may uncover collateral damage to the building. Most of the smell from the smoke has dissipated, but it is still detectable.

This is an important reminder that the only authorized votive candles that may be used at St. Paul’s must be purchased at the St. Paul’s Welcome Center & Book Store. They are approved by the Fire Marshall. All other votive candles will be immediately extinguished and removed.

In addition to the FDNY, please join me in thanking Javier Castro and our maintenance staff. They worked overnight and early this morning so the church could open for the 7:30am Mass. I am also grateful for Kathy Zirnhelt, Fr. Chris, and James Marquez for their invaluable help interfacing with personnel from the Fire Department in the early moments of the incident.

Please offer a prayer of thanksgiving to St. Anthony who protected the Church through his sacred image. The interior of the statue contained most of the fire, most likely preventing further damage and loss.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

God Bless,

You sure this went to an All Hands, Under Control? Maybe I missed it, but I thought it stayed at 2&2.
