Looking back - do you remember

If you were around in 1972 maybe you remember this:

1) A gallon of gas was 55 cents
2) The average income was $11,800
3) The average cost of a house was $27,500
4) The average rent was $165.00 a month
5) The top song was "The first time ever I saw your face" by Roberta Flack
6) Dawn dishwashing detergent had just come out
7) The Top TV Shows were:
a) The Brady Bunch
b) Sesame Street
c) The Benny Hill Show
 
As the French say, "Plus ca change, plus ca la meme chose".... The more things change the more things remain the same.
 
Being an attempted model builder in my teens I do remember these testors. So did mom when she smelled them in my room.

There was a store by the train station at Seneca Ave. and Palmetto St. in Ridgewood. I would take a paper from the rack in the street and place the money in the cigar box. I would then proceed 5 blocks to Knickerbocker Ave. to the firehouse and be lucky if my car was still there at the end of the tour. It was amazing what happened in two places that were five blocks from each other.
 
In the Bronx, many of those stands were literally built in under the stairs leading up to the "El" station. And the vendors usually wore a short pocket apron to hold change and cash. These were provided by the newspapers, with their logo on them. The papers also gave out flat metal bars, with their names, to place on the paper displays, so they won't blow away if the wind picked up.
