Report of smoke 2nd floor of commercial occupancy 100'x100' Class 3

B45: using 1 Engine & 1 Truck, investigating smoke condition 2nd floor

B45: All Hands (E206 & L115 assigned),1 L/S

D11: (2) precautionary lines stretched - (1) to 2nd floor, (1) to sprinkler siamese - smoke 2nd floor

D11: s/c add'l TL (L111)

D11: s/c add'l BC (B35)

D11: still searching for sourse of the smoke - 2nd precautionary line stretched to 2nd floor

D11: we have fire in the 1/2 corner, s/c (2) add'l Trucks (L176 act. L106 & L104) & s/c FT (L154 act. L128) to replace the FT

SB: assign us to the Box

D11: PWH (duration 1 hr. 43 min.)

D11: the 2nd HL was stretched to roof & operated into the ductwork

B45: s/c (2) Engines & (2) Trucks for relief

That's good. Trucks are only useful 100-75 feet in front of the fire building. An engine could be a block away and still do it's job.
 
Don't like throwing hand grenades, but, why are we the only dept. in the country that doesn't count the officer in the manpower? Technically every engine has 5 people, every truck has six. Some engines have six. I was around for "5 man engines". Does it help absolutely! There are some cities that are doing more work than us. A lot/most of them are doing it with two in the front, and two in the back. We are lucky to still have at least three in the back. just putting it out there. Bash away!

Because they arent in the manpower. They have a different job. And both jobs cant be done safely together.

most cities have less manpower and “do more work” because they have no choice. They arent going to the negotiating table and saying to the city “we do this job with 2 guys on the back because we’re good at it, no thanks on the raise or the extra manpower.”
And 99.9999 percent of the rest of this country doesnt have hoseline stretches that most of the bronx, manhattan, and significant parts of brooklyn and queens do. We wouldnt have much of a city left if we didnt have the manpower we do. And even then most of the stretches in larger buildings take 2 and sometimes 3 engines.
