1040hrs- L-30 on location in the rear req. power off from MTA. Car 2393 req. E-241 to hit hydrant near 50 South Main.

1041hrs- Car 2391 rpts fire into exposure. Req. Tower ladder and Engine from Post Road to South Main. E-241 will be the engine, Tower Ladder 9 will be the tower.

1044hrs- Car 2391 req. next Tower Ladder to enter from Westchester Ave and set up next to TL-2.

1045hrs- M/A Dobbs Ferry E-49 and Mount Kisco Engine 105 for an activated alarm at the JFK School.

1135hrs- CMD req. M/A Purchase E-238 to hit hydrant near the Capitol Theater and bring water down to Main St.

1137hrs- M/A Pelham R-45 for a drone to the scene. Pelham rpts unit unavailable.

1138hrs- B-16 req. (2) EMS Rehab units to the scene, one in front and one in rear.

You know, I thought you were nuts - but I saw it with my own eyes. Armonk's engine looked like it was ready to take a dip by the dock near Bar Taco to supply Millwood's engine. I was actually sad to see that old building go.

I, too, noticed a lot of long runs that mutual aid units responded from. If I had to guess, it’s probably due to a lack of manpower… especially during a weekday. Years ago many departments could man 3 or 4 pieces. Now many departments can only get one or two pieces on the road.

Ridgefield and Greenwich are Connecticut departments.
Byram (Greenwich Station 3) is 3500 feet from the incident location, closer than half of the Portchester stations. Most likely that they were there also. They are closely tied to Portchester and initially were incorporated as the East Portchester FD.

There’s plenty of manpower that are on duty 24/7 ( New Rochelle, White Plains, Greenburgh, Scarsdale, Stamford etc.) and a hell of a lot closer than Bedford or Yorktown.

I guess given PC’s history it wouldn’t look good to call paid firefighters to your scene after they laid off 8 of them.

*South Main Street Fire*

Just after 10:30 hours on Monday morning, the Port Chester Fire Department responded to South Main Street for a Reported Structure Fire. E-60, E-61, E-63, TL-2, R-40, Car 2393 were all on the road within 16 seconds of dispatch. Car 2393 (Chief Melillo) arrived on the scene and immediately transmitted a 10-75, advising fire on the first, second, and third floor. With that report, Car 2391 (Chief Sposta) requested two additional tower ladders and transmitted a 2nd Alarm due to the potential of losing half a block of abandoned buildings.

In the early stages of the incident Port Chester units Engines 60,61,62,63, & TL2 took up a defensive position from the front and E64,L30,2392 from the rear, R-40 members operated on both front and back of the fire building. Members were quick to flow water into the main fire building. However, due to heavy fire conditions in the main fire building, the adjacent exposure rapidly became involved with fire. As mutual aid companies arrived on scene and teamed up with our units we were able to deploy additional hand lines and water monitors to increase the volume of water into both fire buildings. This quick action prevented the fire from further spreading to the third exposure and remainder of buildings on the block. The volume of water being used to prevent further fire spread diminished the supply ability of our hydrant system - raising the need for alternative water sources.

With our water supply rapidly deteriorating, PCFD Chief’s took a different approach and requested a Tanker Task Force to supply water to units on scene by drafting out of the nearby Byram River. The Tanker Task Force & Draft Operation proved to be vital in assisting crews on scene with controlling the spread of this fire and eventually with extinguishment.

Also on scene was Field Comm. 1, staffed with County Car 8 & Dispatchers from 60 Control, who were able to work with dispatchers back at 60 Control HQ to direct additional units to the scene/cover Port Chester’s response area, as well as a 10 Unit Tanker Task Force. It’s safe to say that without them, Monday’s fire wouldn’t have gone as smoothly as it did.

We would like to thank the community especially businesses such as Bar Taco, Meals On Wheels, Stop & Shop, Tandoori, the Village Of Port Chester Staff any many more for keeping our firefighters and mutual aid firefighters fed and hydrated throughout the duration of the incident.

In closing we owe a lot of people a THANK YOU; our members, mutual aid FIRE & EMS agencies , 60 control, Police Agencies, DPW, DES, and many more. Thank you for the coordination and hard work of everyone on and off scene - we were able to safely extinguish this large fire without injury to the public or first responders.
