Tower Ladders vs Rear Mount straight ladders

I had always heard that when the FDNY ordered new pumpers in the 1960s if the new pumper had NO POWER STEERING the FDNY got a free Partner Saw with each new pumper. I wonder how many extra parked cars were scraped due to no power steering in those Engine Companies.
Knowing the FDNY of the era this indeed may be true. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired

I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I drove one of those rigs, while I never hit any cars but I did end up with Pop Eye arms

Good stuff brothers. I did not drive a lot in FDNY. But I did fill in from time to time in Satellite 1 when they were located at the then old Medical Officer on Spring Street. (Former Quarters of Engine 30 and Now the FDNY Museum) when I was a fireman in Engine 27. One Sunday I was detailed, and Satellite 1 had a 1954 Mack with a wood cab cover as a spare. No Power Steering and a manual transmission. We responded to what became a 4th alarm in Bushwick, row frames. Quite a rear situation to respond with basically a museum piece to a major fire. I think the 1954 Mack was formally the rig for Engine 18 well before 18 was a Squad.
