Very sad news, from the overhead video it also looks like there was a team truck or team lead in the area when the blast went off.
Old-tech coking ovens are no joke, like blast furnaces they are usually attached to they rarely ever go cold and to do so requires a hell of a lot of forethought...
Grain dust is amazingly explosive in the right conditons and concentrations. I wonder if the mill lost air circ control during operarions and either didnt stop the process early enough or didnt wait long enough to restart the fans. Or both.
Either way, very sad to hear about the lives lost
My cousin worked with Tom on M1 and I met him in passing when they were stationed at Pier 40 when he was retired and stopping by to see "how the boat was doing". He was a good kind guy and definitely someone you could tell had a huge depth of knowledge and skill. RIP.

In the end, with the tail section surviving where the FDR and VDR...

Given the astern speed I wonder if they lost throttle control while maneuvering to dock and it got locked in.
If crew were up in the rigging to strike and stow sails, which would be odd other than for show in confined waterways, they most certainly had a bad go of it for sure.
Regardless...
1400hp on a safe boat seems a bit much, but I do believe this would be the Marine Battalion Chiefs ride and they have a lot of acreage to cover. Im pretty sure I saw it last week on the Brooklyn waterfront cam heading to the job on the Gowanus Canal. Possibly its first call?
Stevedores using slipshod practices with zero oversight or input from their bosses? Color me shocked. Nothing will change down there of course, the ILA is the ILA and they don't care if they get people hurt or killed, they just want their cut. It was like that back in the early 2000s when I was...
