On another site it was reported that the building was sprinklered and they contained the first job. Whoever wanted this building out of the way knew the sprinklers would be out of service and relit it after the companies left the scene. That fire was no rekindle.
Do you have any evidence to support your position?  Until an investigation is completed anything is just speculation!  With layers and material like this rekindles are extremely likely because the fire can appear to be out but deep down inside of the material there is enough heat to flare back up later.

Most places require that a fire watch be implemented if the sprinkler system is left 00S, is this the case in NYC?

We can go the speculation route and you are correct Bulldog, an investigation will hopefully vet out the truth, but if we are sitting around the firehouse table or at the local bar discussing this fire. I am with 1261 Truckie on this one! JUst one man's humble opinion!

Bulldog - no I don't have definitive proof, just a gut feeling based on experience and my own opinion. Back in the day (late 60's/early 70's) went to several jobs that started small, were extinguished and when we re-responded an hour or two later, fire was throughout the building. Like I said...a gut feeling.

Marshal - would enjoy sitting around a firehouse table or a local watering hole discussing the job with you

Signal 73 - thanks for all the updates. Really good job.

noticing not a lot of S.I. companies, once again showing the need for greater fire protection on the island.

Engine 155 went in for relief at 3AM, but still you are right. The problem also is the fact that this box is incredibly far from the island. North shore companies have been responding sporadically though. Guess you can't risk taking a company off the island with the protection so scarce, or as thin as it already is.

Ive had help with some of the info. Doug "319" is a night owl so he has helped after hours. Few friends helped with info of units from their boro.  And fellow Admins on Nycfire Wire have also helped. Team effort

That's the guy who called me on the phone to ask what RS-2 was because he could hear R-2 was still in quarters. ;)
