At 0236 hours, the Pawcatuck FD responded to a report of a working structure at 26 Liberty Street in the Pawcatuck section of Stonington, CT. This was a rear tenement across the street from the Pawcatuck firehouse. First arriving units reported a fully involved 2 1/2 story wood frame residents with reports that all occupants were out of the building. Due to heavy fire conditions, the chief in charge called for an exterior attack only. A full first alarm assignment was transmitted for additional Pawcatuck personnel, a Stonington ambulance, and a FAST team from the Old Mystic FD. Three hand lines were stretched and put into operation as well as a master stream from a tower ladder. The FAST team was cancelled while en route. Westerly (RI) FD stood by at their station but were not called to the scene. Extensive opening up was necessary to access hidden fire and a portion of the roof collapsed into the building. Ten occupants including several small children were checked out by EMS but there were no injuries. They were brought to the firehouse for warmth and refreshment. The American Red Cross was on scene to arrange for temporary housing for the occupants. State Fire Marshals responded to investigate the cause of the fire. A contractor was contacted to demolish the remains of the house.
