Some ENG*49 history.....ENG*49 prior to being disbanded was quartered on the old Welfare Island... site of the old Proby School which was there from around '62 till '75 .....it was formerly Blackwells Island & today it is Roosevelt Island & heavily populated aka S O C Island......today more than ever you would expect a Unit to be on the island.

If anyone has the old WNYF which pictures L116's open cab Mack and a few members up to their eyeballs in foam, lookat the building to the rear. That is the old quarters of E49.

The SOC house wasn't even thought of back then, nor was SOC for that matter. 49's house was just a bit south of the Welfare Island bridge. The Training school was north of the bridge and would have been across the road from the current SOC house.
