North and South Conduit are service roads to the Belt Parkway and are used, unfortunately, as drag strips during the night resulting often in the aforementioned scenario.

I lived on 122st. 1 block north of the conduit. Back in 60's drag racing occurred on the south side of the conduit from the bridge over the parkway into Howard Beach. They then reconfigured it and was no longer as good. Cars were trailered in and raced for money. Many a late night I could hear the racing and it sounded like a real drag strip. The few times I was there watching somebody would yell Cops and in 2 minutes place was deserted. Guess somebody monitored PD frequency. The other place racing was big was on Cross Bay Blvd. because it was so wide open and not too much traffic. 2 of my friends would up as casualties on the bay as we called it.

Sure thing, leave the Big Bow Wow, go south on Cross Bay over the bridge and let the games begin. As you said, back in the 60's of course.

We actually hung out at the White Castle on Rockaway Blvd. near Woodhaven/ Cross Bay Blvd.. They had car hops there and one popular girl was Mary. They also had a Security Guard named Cassabedy. We usually had a couple of belly bombs and then headed down the bay to see what the action was that night. Those were some memorable times drag racing other guys just for self satisfaction knowing your car was faster.
