With 266 fatalities, this would have been the worst incident that I responded to in my entire career; instead it was dwarfed by the 9/11 terrorist attacks which occurred two months earlier. May they all rest in peace...

69Mets, I am in total agreement with you. I also firmly believe (having been there also) that the whole and true story never came out because of 9/11 and not wanting to start a panic among the public.

I remember being awakened by a phone call that morning. I was sleeping off a great night of drinking with a friend for their birthday. My friend from Long Beach, CA called me to see if I was ok. I cranked up the scanner, and turned on the TV. My heart sunk when I found out where it was. I found out later on, my brother, an FDNY*EMS Medic, had been about 200 feet away from the crash site when it happened, and spent a good chunk of the day assisting. I only felt a little better speaking to my mother and finding out he was ok.
