Interesting whenever I see these NW/Bx fires today with E52/L52 in on anything above a 1st Alarm. Back in the old days the 52's were "sacred cows" as were E63, L39 and of course, E70/L53. They would only respond on a 1st alarm assignment, never relocate and were always immediately covered. Now I see E52, L52 & L39 assigned on multiple alarms like the recent 5th alarmer at 204th & Bainbridge. ;)

huh 56 relocated to 37 i dont know why it makes no sense they are barley 20 blocks apart.

Engine 68 also had only 1st alarm boxes until recently.

L56 to L37 makes perfect sense .

37, 46 and 32 operating at the 7-5.

56 acting 37 can cover 37's area, a piece of both 46's and 32's area as well as part of their own response area..

Since when, I have a stack of Bronx and Manhattan 1950 thru 1975 assignment cards with E68 on the 3rd, 4th, & 5th alarms. I also have some 1979 vintage Washington Hts. box cards that don't have E68 so I have to guess that's when they started holding them.

Engine 68 also had only 1st alarm boxes until recently.

hey guitarman,
could you elaborate when you say "sacred cows". i can see how the 52's were and sill are, they pmust be available to protect the hill  but E63 and L39 i wouldnt have thought. they were both single companies back then , must have been a great time in woodlawn.  is it beacuse of the area they covered without other companies too close or becasue of the strong irish clout the neighbohood use to have?  also i thought it said scared cows at first!

I think last line of defense would describe them because they are the furthest north in the Bronx. In the case of L39, yes strong political clout kept them in Woodlawn.
