Question - If extra rigs (e.g. - brush units) are parked outside - are tanks kept filled in cold weather or do they have to be filled for response?
When I was with WHB, before the new building was built and after the old 1 was knocked down, the engines were parked in a chain link fence enclosure. We dumped the tanks and pump, brought the extinguishers and eventually nozzles inside so they didn't freeze. I would imagine FDNY would do the same especially if it's a poly tank that could split.
Problem is, even though there's no water in the tank, moisture can build up in the lines freeze and block the nozzle in a fire.first time you use them.

Ask me how I Know.

All the tanks on each BFU are empty for winter season besides the ones kept inside. I believe when it has a crew during the brush season they keep it full. For engines that are outside now like E287 & E3 chauffeur is suppose to run the pump every hour or 2 over night.
