The Westerly (RI) FD was dispatched to a structure fire at 32 Canal Street. Upon arrival, they had a 3 story wood frame vacant structure, approximately 50 x 100, which was fully involved. The property backs up on the Pawcatuck River which is the state border between RI and CT. Westerly FD had a full response: E 1, 2, 3, and 4 along with L 1. Westerly EMS and Westerly PD responded as well. Early into the fire, the IC requested mutual aid from Pawcatuck (CT) FD for their Tower Ladder, T- 45. Upon arrival of Pawcatuck units, the Pawcatuck Chief requested response from one engine and E T-43 responded. Half an hour into the fire there was a collapse of the roof; firefighting was also hindered by downed primary power lines. The intense heat melted the siding off a building across the street. The Pawcatuck Chief requested an additional engine and E T-41 responded.
The fire was attacked with numerous handlines, Westerly's ladder pipe, Pawcatuck's Tower Ladder, and a deck gun off Westerly Engine 3.
Several departments were called in to provide coverage in the area: Ashaway (RI) and Stonington Borough to Westerly headquarters, Dunns Corners Tower Ladder and Watch Hill engine to Westerly Station #2, North Stonington engine to Pawcatuck. Stonington EMS sent two rigs: one to Westerly EMS headquarters and one to Pawcatuck FD.
