E88/L38  Home box.

If you Google map this address and then navigate a half block up the street you will see the quarters of 88/38.  In the photo that appears on my hit,  L 38 is either responding or backing into its bay.

This firehouse is unique among those in the Department, the only one designed by this particular architect. From the Centennial History of the two companies: ?...the firm of of Herts & Tallent from Manhattan was selected, a departure from those usually employed by the FDNY. In fact, Herts & Tallent specialized in theater design.  It?s most notable venue, the New Amsterdam Theater, still stands near Times Square, famous for the Zigfeld Follies in its day and the Lion King more recently. (A glance at the restored theater today shows the similarity to the firehouse on Belmont Avenue.)?

Unique to the interior of this building are marble (rather than tile) walls and mahogany trim and banisters.  The members take great pride in their quarters, with a long tradition of spit and polish, contributing to their overall reputation as a ?West Point? house.
