Queens companies responding to assist a confined space/collapse rescue in Long Island - about an hour ago 

Does anybody have any information on this?
 
East Hills, Nassau Cnty. 19 Peacock lane, male trapped in a cesspool that collapsed. They are using box 500 for the incident. R4 & the collapse unit with the compressor unit, Tak unit and 2 Con Ed Vac trucks are on scene.
 
Units that responded:

Batt 53
Haz Mat Batt.
Rescue 4
Rescue Collapse 4
Ladder 116 Transporting Rescue Collapse 4
SOC Compressor
Ladder 152 SOC Support Truck
Rescue Battalion
Tactical Support 2
Squad 288

Rescue 3 and Rescue Collapse 3 was originally assigned, but taken off the box

Batt 53 reported to Car 11A that no further was needed.

Interesting that they called FDNY on mutual aid.  Nassau County with its 60+ fire departments does have departments trained in special services. For example on the northeast quadrant  Bethpage is trained and has a Collapse Rescure Company,  Syosset has a Technical Rescue team with special training for confined space rescue, and Hicksville is the Haz Mat Company.

LI has some good "volunteer" fire departments.  With that said, who would you want to have respond if you were in the cesspool?  Experienced and trained personnel who do this type of work on a regular basis or a well intentioned volunteer team with somewhat limited "hands-on" experience. No disrespect to the volunteers but there is no one better than FDNY in this situation. It's like going to a community hospital on Long Island versus a big name facility in Manhattan if you have something seriously wrong.  Have the gall bladder done at the community hospital but if you have cancer go to Sloan Kettering!
 
on the dispatch side of things as i never heard one for mutual aid how does it work?? does the incident chief stay in contact with the co, do the units say switching to long island ( lol i know they dont do that). do the fdny units respond as one big group or do they just respond by themselves.

Syosset disbanded thier technical rescue team a few years ago and sold the units to westchester county.
 
Freeport's Technical Rescue Team was dispateched with FDNY.

The rescued worker was wearing a red hard hat with FDNY markings.

WOW-- Along with the Local Dept's, noticed MTA ESU( was it near the LIRR ), Nassau Cty ESU, Nassau Cty Fire Marshall, American Red Cross.

Did not see Syosset FD.  Its pretty awesome that the Counties can call FDNY for help and FDNY is able to send all the appropriate resources. Good Job to all involved.

Don't know why MTA ESU was there, not next to LIRR, but not too far either (Oyster Bay Branch).  Did not see Syosset either. Did see Bethpage Technical Rescue, blue hardhats, and North Bellmore Technical Rescue. 
 
rdm, FDNY usually is told meet PD at certain point for the escort. yesterday they met up Nassau highway patrol.
 
Syosset no longer has a TRT unit...disbanded several years ago.

It makes sense..stage the units at the border so they can get escorted in to the scene.  Many times, drivers are not familiar with an area they are not normally at.
