WHEN: TUES EVENING, 2 JAN 2024 at 1930 HRS, Eastern Time.

SPEAKER: Wayne Powell

SUBJECT: A Historical Look at the National Fire Academy

The U.S. National Fire Academy (NFA) of the United States Fire Administration (USFA) will celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2024. As an entity of the Federal Government and in partnership with state and local entities, federal agencies, national professional associations, the private sector and beyond, the NFA is the delivery arm of many of the USFA’s programs, products and services. This presentation will provide important and interesting perspectives about why and how these partnerships have proven so vital to America’s defenses against unwanted fire. Of particular interest to the nation’s firefighting community, the NFA and its parent / partner agencies have developed and delivered training and educational initiatives impacting management, leadership, incident command & control, firefighter safety, all aspects of prevention & investigation, and the like, impacting thousands of firefighters in departments of all types and sizes in every state to include making available at no charge a wide range of resources, too.

Wayne Powell is a retired member of the senior staff of the United States Fire Administration’s National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He also spent a number of years with Marriott Fire Protection (the hotel people) and delivered training programs at the local, county and state levels. With over 50-years of fire services and fire protection experience, including various municipal fire protection roles in departments large and small, his fire-related travels have taken him to every state in the nation plus a great many foreign countries, too. He is a ‘Life Member’ of 2 Maryland fire departments – Silver Spring in Montgomery County and Emmitsburg’s Vigilant Hose Company in Frederick County. A fire historian, Wayne is the retired Executive Director of the National Fire Heritage Center.
