Q: What are Queens Boxes 269 and 37, and why are they automatic 2nd alarms?
A: These are the crash boxes for JFK and LaGuardia Airport, respectively. These can only be transmitted via manual/verbal alarms from the airport towers and are transmitted for an aircraft in distress

Each box brings an automatic 2nd Alarm

Someone asked elsewhere on social media - when a plane lands, the engines are somewhat reversed in full thrust for braking. Did the engines shut down automatically on impact, or did they have to be shut down, how and by whom?
They were so fortunate that there was no fuel tank ruptures on impact. A resulting fire could have been deadly to the all on the plane.
 
Question/observation. Is the SP an automatic response to the airports? This investigation will probably take a year like DC. Impact 40' either way would have been a very different outcome.

Super Pumper goes automatically on Boxes 0269 and 0037.

Does anyone actually know who transports and who's the backup for the SP. E260 transports it, and apparently E291 is the backup but E238 is bringing it?

I guess things might have changed briefly while 260's floors are getting done. Once floors are done it'll be 260-291

If you watch the video, the plane lost complete power upon colliding with the truck. I'm sure the engines lost all power at the same time.
 
Was just looking at Fb and of course just about everybody is talking about this in someway shape or form. But 1 article brought up an interesting point, and of course the comments are all over the place.

The article states that at first no one told the passengers what to do. Thinking normally, that in an emergency the pilots will tell the flight attendants do this or dont open 1 side or the other etc. With the cockpit missing, ( and I say that will all due respect to the pilots) there was no one to say what to do next. ( Forgetting all.of the people who ignore the safety briefing anyway or too busy playing on their phones then listening to emergency instructions)
Im sure its going to get looked at, but I'm wondering if there is a plan for something like that where say the fuselage is in 2 or 3 pieces where you may have flight attendants separated from their normal chain.
 
Its not what it looks like. Airports are entirely different animals. Basically you have to have special permission and training just to drive on the field, and that's to work there. The PAPD has their own set of sogs. When its determined that FDNY is needed, the units are staging at their main PAFD building. (JFKs 269. Im sure LGA has a similar staging point) They are led out to the incident as the PAPD or airport ops units can talk directly to the tower for permissions. And go straight to the scene. The 51( JFK 1st due bat) and probably the 1st due to LGA I beleive has a tower or PAPD radio in their truck, so they can coordinate on the way or while staging. What you dont want, is 20 some odd fd units driving around trying to find the best way to an incident, while at the same time aircraft may still be moving trying to get back to gates, or being directed away from the incident. Even sitting still, a jet engine idling can ruin your day. Even more so if you hit an aircraft.

Both LGA and JFK have training drills every so often. Kennedys is Operation Safe and I forget what LGAs is called but its full sized mock mci plane crash with "victims" made up to look real. I've done several with the scouts at both. They run the whole thing like real over 2 or 3 hours. PA comes out, puts out some real fire, FD is escorted onto the field and puts out the rest, and all of the victims are triaged etc. They get along very well. It just looks different from the outside.

It amazing there was no fire, post impact. In one photo I see members defueling the aircraft. Note one of Stewardess was found ejected from the aircraft along with her jump seat and: "SERVIVED", no wonder with the pilot and the 2nd officer both killed there was no one to give directions. YES you should listen to the safety briefing instructions and read the Instruction card at the beginning of every flight. Note that jet and other aircrafrt6 fuel are lighter than water. This is one of the reasons "Sully's Miricle on the Hudson" did not sink when it crash landed in the water, I was, full of buoyant Jet Fuel. I was at the incident at LaGuardia in 1992 where the aircraft failed to ascend upon takeoff, due to icing on the wings. I believe 2 women died during that crash. That aircraft was floating half impaled on the water positioned runway approach lights. Members of FDNY Rescue 4 and Rescue 1 made truly great rescue at that incident and received medals for those rescues. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26
