Pontiac Street in Boston was a harrowing scene late Monday as a heavy blaze swept through a multi-story building, displacing a dozen residents and forcing one person to jump from the second floor of the structure to escape the blaze.

The fire at the three-family home at 59 Pontiac St. in Mission Hill broke out around 9:50 p.m., with flames initially appearing on the second and third floors of the building, according to a series of tweets from the Boston Fire Department.

A second alarm was eventually sounded for the blaze at the three-and-a-half-story building, the department noted. By around 10:30 p.m., firefighters were still working to bring the fire under control as it pushed up to the roof. Caution was being taken for live power lines that had fallen in the street from the burning home.

The blaze was eventually extinguished, but not before causing an estimated $750,000 worth of damages, and leaving 12 people as well as one puppy displaced, according to the department.

The individual who jumped from the second floor of the building was taken to the hospital. The department did not say how severe the person’s injuries were. No firefighters were injured while battling the blaze, authorities said.

Firefighters and the American Red Cross of Massachusetts helped the displaced residents. Personnel from the Boston Sparks Association as well as Boston EMS and police also assisted at the scene of the fire, according to officials.

Authorities remained at the scene to watch for hotspots and investigate the cause of the blaze, the department said.
