A Fire broke out about 1900 several blocks from the cruise port last night. The fire spread thru several residential blogs. Witness reported several booms as the fire jumped from 1 bldg to the next. The Nassau FD, was short handed as several units had been sent to Freeport to battle the brush fires there and had not returned.

My last visit to Nassau leads me to believe they were short before they sent resources to Freeport! The straw market burned in the early 90's near the port due to the same circumstances.

I would agree. I was in Nassau one time on a cruise and 1 of their engines went by while we were looking around. Had 2 people on it. Didn't look like they had too much on the rig from what I remember. Not knocking them, just an observation. I don't think they have a governing body for the fire service either. I seem to remember that basically crews showed up and did their own thing.but I could be wrong.

The very first cruise I took in 2011 We pulled into Nassau and were greeted with this fire and were delayed getting off ship. when we did get off and were able to walk around there were only 3 or 4 fire trucks visible. also hard t be believe because Nassau is an island we never sa a fireboat at this fire.IMG_20250504_171416.jpg

From talking to people that deal with building in the Bahamas, apparently its not the easiest thing in the world. Contracts are written in pencil and invisible ink and the bureaucracy is worse than some cities here. Every body has their hand in anything. I read an article where the tourism head, basically said that the Bahamas needed to get there act together because a lot of money was leaving the islands. And potential money was walking because of all the political bs.

A recent example is Carl Allen. He bought the Walkers Cay Marina and is trying to redo it and bring it back to life. He also had a deal with the Bahamas for treasure hunting where he would finance the expeditions around Freeport and he would spilt the finds like 50/50. He even built a museum in Freeport for the finds. At some point several years after a few years, the Bahamain govt. decided to rip up the contract and decided that it would be 70/30 or something close to it.
