Just after midnight, the Westerly, RI FD responded to a box alarm for a fire at 37 High Street in downtown Westerly. Prior to arrival, there were numerous reports of people trapped. Upon arrival, there were people hanging out of third floor windows of the three story brick 80 x 100 mixed occupancy building. Heavy fire in the rear required a full response from the Pawcatuck (CT) FD. Three civilians were rescued via ground ladders. The fire involved the rear deck on the number two and three floors and two rear apartments on the third floor. Part of the second floor deck collapsed onto a Ford van and the van became fully involved.
