Happy Birthday Tom thanks for all you do, brother.
Also Smokie the Bear resides at the Washington D.C. Zoo. I think he is about the 12th Bear with the same name. The 1st Smokie the Bear was found by U.S. Forest ranger at a large Forest Fire out West, nursed back to health from severe burns and has been a symbol for Forest Fire Prevention for all these years. He was named Smokie after "Smokie" Joe Martin a legendary Assistant Chief of the FDNY back in the early 1900s. At one time "Smokie" Joe Martin was the Captain of Engine 27 located at 173 Franklyn Street on Manhattan Lower West Side, near Ladder 8's "Ghost Busters" firehouse. I have an old FDNY housewatch Journal from the early 1900s that I believe is from about the time. Joe Martin was the E-27 Captain.
During that time Engine 27 along with a number of FDNY units responded to Baltimore Maryland, via railroad Flatcar to help deal with a major conflagration in the City of Baltimore. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired (formerly Firemen in FDNY Eng. 27)
