I worked with Gerry in E 5. He was a great fire officer and an awesome human being. He went on to become the Captain of E 252, then a BC in B 14. He saw his share of fires during his career. I saw him 4 months ago at a plaque dedication in uniform for a former Captain in E5. He was still sharp as a tack and I never saw him without a smile on his face. Rest in Peace CHIEF, job well done. I salute you!

REST IN PEACE BROTHER.....PRAYERS FOR THE COMFORT OF THE FAMILIES.

With regret, we inform you of the relatively sudden and untimely passing of Billy Alford while away on a family vacation (Billy is a retired FDNY Lieutenant who retired in the aftermath of 9/11 with a WTC related illness).
William A. “Billy” Alford, 68, of Warwick, New York, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, in Limerick, Ireland, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 13, 1956, Billy was the son of the late William and Joan Alford. He spent his formative years in the Bay Ridge neighborhood before graduating from Villanova University in 1979. In 1981, he followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the New York City Fire Department, proudly serving the City for 21 years.
In 1984, Billy married the love of his life, Diane (Willis) Alford. Together, they raised three daughters. “The girls" were the center of his world.
Billy was an avid reader, music lover, sports fan, handyman, loyal friend, and above all, a devoted father and husband. A proud New Yorker, Billy’s wit, warmth, and wisdom left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He will be remembered for his quick humor, simple yet profound life advice, captivating storytelling, and most of all, his genuine and selfless heart. Billy was the embodiment of authenticity and kindness and will be deeply missed by all those who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Diane; his doting daughters, Katie, Kerry (Alex), and Chrissy (Weston); his siblings, Kathleen (Wayne) Segal, Mary (Daniel) Symon, Joan (George) Schlittner, Eileen (the late Phillip) Petti, Patricia (Frank) DeSantis, and Michael Alford; 16 nieces and nephews; 21 great-nieces and nephews; and many treasured friends. Billy was preceded in death by his sorely missed brother-in-law and fellow New York City Fireman, Lt. Phillip Petti, who lost his life on September 11, 2001.
We invite all who love Billy to join us in honoring and celebrating his life. Memorial Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave, Warwick, NY. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 13 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home, followed by interment in Warwick Cemetery. Following the burial, a Celebration of Life will be held at Emmerich Tree Farm, 101 Sleepy Valley Road, Warwick, NY, beginning at 1:00 PM. As a sign of respect, all members are encouraged to attend the Wake and Celebration of Life in their FDNY Dress Uniform.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family at this time. May Billy Rest in Peace. Thank you for your Service to the City of New York.

Bob was until recently a regular at Columbian Meetings, CSU and Brooklyn breakfast. He missed last 2 or 3 and heard his health was going down hill. We had a few nice conversations about old times at the Rock. He will be missed. RIP Bob and condolences to the Family.
If I'm not mistaken. Bob Checco was in charge of the FDNY Auxiliary program when the training center was on Welfare Island.... This has to be in the 1970s or 1980s.

Bob was very active for many years with the Florida FDNY Retirees Assn, When he recently lost his wife, he moved back up to New York to be with his family. He could always be seen at the monthly retirees meetings here until his health recently started to fail.
When Bob was in his L.I.C. shops office, once you got to know him, if there was something you really needed for the firehouse - whether from the Tool Room, carpenter's shop, electricians or plumbing, he had the ways and means (behind the scenes) of getting it done for you. A phenomenal personality, a true gentleman, and as he moved up in the ranks, it seemed that he was always given an "acting in the next rank" title.
He wound up as a BC and deservedly so. He could have been easily dubbed "Chief in Charge - Of Whatever You Need"
Rest in Peace, Bobby
