I don't understand some of these relocations. Engine 56 and Ladder 21 from the far end of East Boston. That leaves them with 2/1 for the district, extra BFD units coming through the tunnel or requiring mutual aid from Chelsea, Revere, etc. Just my opinion.

Just going by the run card

Just like i don?t under stand what L21 to TC is

L21 to TC means Ladder 21 to Tower Company which was the previous designation of Ladder 3 until 2002.

Moving E56 & L21 to E10 & L3 simply fills the coverage gap in Downtown and creates a coverage gap in Orient Heights, rather than moving only one of the units and having one unit in both firehouses.
This is a traditional relocation strategy for fire coverage that does not leave a Ladder alone in a station.  Note that Boston has never had a "Truck House' (single Ladder Co alone).

Before moving in the 1970's  Ladder 4 was in a single "Truck House" on Dudley St. about a block from their present quarters.

Also up until about 1960 Ladder 12 was by themselves on Columbus Ave near Roxbury Crossing. I believe they were closed when new quarters were built for E 22 (and L-13) on Tremont St and E-42  (and Ladder 30) on Columbus Ave near Eggleston Square.

Truth be known I am not really old enough to remember the, but I do remember that the Fire Patrol ran out of old L-12's quarters.  One of the last Captains at L-12 was the legendary Vinnie Bolger.

Engine 12, 14, and Ladder 4 were all single company houses. BFD closed the 3 and opened up a single house, AKA "Fort Dudley". Later during the Prop times E-12 was dis-banded. This is a pix of their 100' Maxim. In 1967 my uncle, Lt Joseph Donovan, was shot and wounded during riot conditions were assigned to Ladder 4.

Maxim, thank you for the correction.  I was thinking of single unit, single bay, truck only houses.  Ladder 4 initially shared quarters with Chemical 10, but yes, they were alone from 1922 to 1974.  Ladder 12 shared their quarters on Tremont with Engine 13 from 1938 to 1960, when Engine 13 moved and Ladder 12 was closed because of E22/L13 opening in a new house.

Just a point of information, of the 98 firehouses with the Chicago Fire Department, only 1 house, Truck 24 on the Far South Side @ 10400 S Vincennes is a single truck house.

Mr. Historian

Thank yoi\u for the update.  I guess I knew L-12 was with E-13, and I had a good grasp on why they closed, but as you can imagine I was quite young in 1960.

Thanks again for the good info on the BFD.

;)
