On June 17th, 1972 Boston Fire Alarm transmitted Box1571 for a building fire at 160 Commonwealth Avenue, the former Vendome Hotel. This was a 5 and 7 story building that was being remodeled. First arriving reported a "working fire" followed by a second alarm @ 1445, the third @ 1502 and the fourth @ 1506. At 1720 the fire was reported "knocked down", but at 1728 there was a collapse of an entire corner of the building. Nine firefighters had answered their last alarm. The site is now marked by a monument to honor those who paid the ultimate price with their sacrafice.
