Grammer School was St. Teresa of Avila on Classon Ave & St. John's Place in beautiful Brooklyn. Nuns and lay teachers for grades K to 4th. Xaverian Brothers 5th through 8th. The girls school (yes we had separate facilities) was lay teachers and Sisters of St. Joseph.
High School was Brooklyn Prep with the Jesuits (God's Storm Troopers). Graduated in 1969
Whenever summoned to the Prinicipal's office at St. Teresa's (i.e Brother Aiden), if the conversation started with the words "Come in, Pal" you knew you were in deep stuff.
Brooklyn Prep had a "Prefect of Discipline" (Father Hamill), whose face was carved from a single block of granite and could send chills through the toughest. While the Jesuits were some of the best educated people I've ever met, they also had no problem using their dukes when the situation called for it.
It was a different era.

"Manhattan" is right. These are some hilarious stories. But we were all terrified.

I sure enjoy them. Thanks.

I went to the Same Grammar school as 1261 Truckie, but a little different,I had two female lay teachers in the third grade one was obsessed with penmanship the other had everyone in the class growing a sweet Potato Plant. We had Xaverian Brothers starting in the 4th grade known as 4A. The first introduction to the The Xaverian brothers  was an appropriately named Brother Justice, He had a mean face and looked like a Volkswagon with the doors open. The kind brother must have stopped at the local shoemaker because when everyone was seated he had this beautiful piece of Cats-Paw that was used to sole shoes with That he was playfully slapping on his hand. This was just the start, then in 1955 on to Power Memorial Academy, and I believe there is already enough out there about that kind Brotherhood  LOL    suffice it the say that through it all I'd do it again because to be Honest thay actually made me a better person.

Most of these posts, if not all, concerned the religious orders and the males. What about the girls, skirts could not be above the knee, the Head Penguin have her yardstick to measure the skirts. And @ my high school in Brookline, Mass the girls out-smoked the guys in the bathrooms. My grammar school was St. Patricks in Roxbury, right behind BFD E-12 and BPD D-9.

In the 8th grade at St. Teresa's I had Brother Ward whose trick was to carry a pocketful of little pieces of chalk. Whe he saw someone not paying attention he would have the students part a path for him and would throw a piece of chalk at the offending party and hit him square between the eyes. Many of us carried the red spot of shame.
Brother Ward looked amazingly like Rocky Colavito an outfielder for the Detroit Tigers, but he would never admit to being related.

I used to ride the Bee Line bus home from Archbishop Molloy (Jamaica to Lynbrook, walk from there to East Rockaway).  Every afternoon along with us would be 5 or 6 girls from Dominican Academy in Jamaica.  On their way from school to the bus, they could be seen frantically grabbing themselves around the waist . . . what they were doing was rolling the waist of their skirts so the hem line would be a couple of inches above the knee.  It was more important to show some thigh, even if it did make them appear a little heavier than they actually were. Penguin power only extended so far . . .

Hi Grump,
Many of us, who attended Catholic schools, did so in an all boys environment. St. Teresa's had two separate buildings, Boy's school (on St John's Place near Classon Ave) and Girl's school (corner of Classon Ave & Sterling Place). Both buildings even had separate schoolyards. Brooklyn Prep High School was also all male.
The opposite sex was something the good nuns, brothers, priests and lay teachers tried to shield you from. I do however remember the young ladies of Bishop Mc Donnell's(all girls high school on Eastern Parkway & Classon Ave) bounding down their front stairs at 3:15 in the afternoon rolling their plaid uniform skirts up above their knees. I also remember the good nuns of St. Brendan's (another all girl high school, which was Prep's sister school) patrolling the boat when we took our annual boat ride to Rye Playland and invited St Brendan's to accompany us.
Ah those indeed were the days

Do you remember The Old Mill at Rye Playland?  Happily, they couldn't patrol those boats!  'Nuff said.

How about kneeling acros the top of a metal wastebasket....that sure hurt....as tough as the Nuns in Grammar School were they were  topped by the Franciscan Brothers in HS who were then topped by the DI's in Boot Camp...natural progression.

No E.M.T's either ! When i was 9 or 10... i rode my Solid Rubber-2 Wheeler from Kings Hwy to
Marine Park [Ave. U-Brooklyn]
My Friend Al, (12), was older and had a Real Bicycle  ( Ya' know, with Tires w/ Tubes & all...).
He rode his bike thru a sand pile and enjoyed the slipping & swerving so much, he yelled to me
to follow... Well the Solid Rubber 'Tires' didn't do so well in the sand and i went FLYING off the
bike, which too, went FLYING thru the air, landing Right Next to Me and one of the pedals slicing open my Left Eye Lid. ( i still have the scar to this day... 7 Stitches on The Eyelid !).
I was Bleedin' All Over da' Place, people who had gathered for the Excitement, Rushed away in sheer horror .
In short order a 6-3 Pct. Scooter Posted to the Park arrived & it seemed to me he did quite a bit
of yelling into his radio about a 'Bus'. [There gonna' take me to the Doctor on a Bus ???]
While they were debating about putting me in an R.M.P. [NYPD Sector Car], The Red & White
'Bread Truck' NYC Health & Hospitals Corp.  Ambulance arrived.
NYPD contacted My Mom at Home [Mom's used to be Home back in those Days...] .
She didn't Drive, [Dad did all the Driving that needed to be done]. Luckily, a Fuller Brush
door-to-door Salesman [Remember ?] arrived just before the 6-3 called, and he told My Mom
he would drive her to Marine Park.
Well the Ambulance 'Attendant' / 'Aide' [?], who did a wonderful job of applying Direct Pressure
to my Wounded Eye with an endless series of Clean White Towels, decided we couldn't wait
for Mom. He yelled to the 'Driver' that if we left Right Away, we Might 'Save the Eye'... . (Wonderful!)
We got to Coney Island Hospital in a Great Big Hurry, NYC H&H Ambulance w/ 6-3 Sector Car Escort,
and 'We' did indeed 'Save The Eye'.
After Emergency Treatment @ C.I.H, I was transferred (via 'Bread Truck') to Brooklyn Eye & Ear
Hospital  [ Remember?] for further treatment.

No Lawsuits... I did Something Stupid and 'Took My Lumps'. Dad's NY TeleCo. Ins. Covered Medical Expenses. I Can't Believe We Made It !

TY, jk.

Richie & I worked together at Chase Auto Body on E.35 & Ave I, & Vollaro's Auto Body @ Utica ave. & Ave D. Whenever I saw that guy, he was Studying for FDNY Firefighter Test and E.M.T Cert.
I believe his Dad was a Ret. BC prior to his Passing (R.I.P).
He more than once told me his reason for becoming an E.M.T.-Trained NYC Firefighter was when his Father passed, No One On-Scene, NYPD & FDNY, knew CPR.

Back at Chase Auto we also had Tommy Marino (later Eng.310), Ira Thorner & Sandy Brown, all went to FDNY. These are the guys I Used to 'Chase' Fires with. We had FDNY, NYPD, & E.M.S. Scanners and those Hopped-up Chevy  Yellow Tow Trucks racing thru the streets of BKLYN at Ungodly Speeds thru da' Middle of the Night and were often 'First On-Scene'.

Also, Richie M's Brother (Peter, i think...[?]), Worked for Al&Leo's Auto AB on Ft.Hamilton & 36 St., chasin' Fires All Night Also. He was Smart Enough to bring a Camera [!], and wound-up w/
NY Daily News. He was on the FDNY List but i DNK if he made it to 'The Department.'
Lord, we had More Fun than a Truck-Load of Clowns !  8)
