A fire in a high rise apartment building caused heavy smoke conditions overnight. Engine 17 and Ladder 17 were dispatched for an automatic fire alarm. While in route, calls came in to the dispatch center reporting smoke in the building, and the incident was upgraded to a still alarm (reported structure fire). When E17 arrived residents were reporting smoke on multiple floors. E17 requested the incident upgraded to a working fire and second alarm. Crews had a difficult time finding the actual fire. It was 30 minutes after the first company arrived on scene before the fire was located in a utility closet in the laundry room, located in the basement. The fire was fully extinguished in less than five minutes after the fire was located. Preliminary reports from firefighting companies reported the fire stated at an electrical panel and ignited some trash below. After the fire was extinguished crews still reported smoke heavy enough to require masks as high as the sixth floor.
