It seems FDNY and Con Ed work alot together. Do they have crews on duty all the time? Where I come from if you need them other than the dayshift hours we have to wait for the crews to leave their home,go get their equipment, and then respond to the scene. It can be a long wait sometimes.

Con Ed is a 24/7 operation, the FD and ConEd work well together at all types of incidents from manhole fires, transformer fires, overhead fires and Gas leaks, pipe break stuff. Also in Manhattan Steam Leaks due to high pressure steam.

Because of all the offices in New York City, Con Ed has to do a lot of work at night anyway so we did not interrupt business.  Because of that they have quite a bit of staffing around the clock.  Even where I live in Louisville Kentucky the local utility LG&E has a minimum of 3 crews available around the clock and more when storms are expected.  It's really not that unusual in a large city.

In the past I have seen a Con Ed vehicle with lights and siren on it in Brooklyn, was actually on Ralph Ave. What type of response would they go EMERGENCY too and the vehicle I saw was a older Chevy Blazer( Blue and White ), I assume a Supervisor.
Does there vacuum truck have lights and siren, appears to be orange lights. When requested does it get an escort or just have to fight there way through the traffic!

Con Ed has an emergency responce group that responds to all emergencies. They are basically the experts in electric, gas, steam and substation operations. You will see them at all major operations around NYC and Westchester. Some of these people give instructional classes at the FDNY Training school.

I have recently seen ConEd trucks with light packages that would make even the buffiest buff jealous - I'm talking red and blue strobes. The FDNY liaison units even have the FDNY logo on the door next to the ConEd logo.

Are we talking about SUV's or full blown Commercial Trucks. Never seen that door logo before. Do they have direct Communications to Fire Dispatchers if needed.

Is that the guy to go to if you need rolls of electrical tape?

The red con-ed trucks respond when requested for urgent situations. Such as numerous blown manhole covers, fire from manholes, high CO in surounding buildings from manholes, buildings collapses. The red trucks mostly stop the situation from getting worse and the blue trucks will do the repairs when they have time to do so.

The vaccum trucks only have the yellow lights, no sirens that I know or have heard of. Usually they'll get an escort.

Here's a couple shots of the Con Ed/FD Liaison unit in the aftermath of Saturday's storm.
