A 7-year-old boy brought a .22-caliber handgun and more than a dozen rounds of ammunition into his Far Rockaway school Thursday, causing a lockdown and sparking a police investigation into how he got the gun from home, officials said.
The youngster brought the gun to the Wave Preparatory School in his book bag at around 7:30 a.m. when he was escorted there by his mother, said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne. Aside from the .22-caliber Phoenix Arms handgun and ammunition, the bag also contained a flare pistol, Browne said. Because of the youngster's age, Browne didn't want to identify him.
The child's 53-year-old mother discovered he had taken the weapon to school when one of her two adult sons told her the gun had been in the book bag, Browne said. Detectives are trying to determine if the youngster placed the gun in his bag by himself or if it was put there by one of his two older half-brothers, perhaps under the belief that the child wouldn't be going to class because of the school bus strike, Browne said.
After learning that the gun had been taken to school, the mother went to Wave Preparatory and tried to take her son out of class, Brown said. The boy then told her that he had given the "gun" to a classmate, although he was talking about the flare pistol, Browne said. School safety officers who were on the premises checked the 7-year-old's book bag and found the .22-caliber weapon and the ammunition, according to Browne.
Wave Preparatory was on lockdown for about an hour, police said. Investigators were probing the actions of the mother and trying to determine which of her older sons may have originally possessed the weapon, Browne said.
"Whether the mother is to be charged or not is still under review," Browne said. "It is all under investigation."
He added that the youngster's two older half-brothers were known to the NYPD as crime victims and that police were getting a search warrant to see if there were other weapons in the household.
... ......................................coumo's 1st question was .."how many rounds did his magazine hold?".....what about FDNY Fire Marshals along w/NYPD whose magazine capacity are now technically illegal ?.
