The Deer Park Fire Department was alerted for a reported building fire at the Maple Crest Apartments on Baldwin Path about 18:15 on August 20, 2023. First Assistant Chief Rios was the first to respond and was told two were taken reporting a fire. The Dix Hills Fire Department was also alerted as the automatic mutual aid Ladder. Chief Rios arrived along with Second Assistant Chief Jackson, and a working fire was transmitted with fire showing from the first floor of a two-story Garden Apartment complex. Engine 1-4-11 was first due. There are no hydrants in the complex, so engines had a long stretch to a hydrant on the surrounding streets. Due to the location of the building, units had to pull into a grassy area. Ladder 1-4-10, Dix Hills Ladder 2-8-8, and North Babylon Ladder 1-8-6 set up in front of the building. The crew from 1-4-11 put the first line into operation, the crew from Engine 1-4-7 stretched a second line. As crews started operating in the building, conditions began to deteriorate quickly as the fire had now extended to send floor and cockloft and started spreading horizontally. The decision was made to evacuate all members from the building and go to an exterior attack. With multiple hand lines and the master streams from 1-4-10 and 2-8-8, the fire was knocked down in about 40 minutes with extensive overhaul to be done. Once searches were able to be done, all were negative. Multiple units on either side of the fire building were evacuated. The fire destroyed six units, and numerous others had smoke and water damage. The last units left the scene at approximately 23:00. The Red Cross was requested to the scene to assist the displaced residents. Additional mutual aid to the scene was provided by Dix Hills, Babylon, Melville and Wyandanch for Engines, West Babylon, West Islip, and Brentwood for Ladders, West Babylon, Lindenhurst and Commack for RIT, and Ambulances from Dix Hills and Lindenhurst. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
