To my knowledge all 5 Rescues, all Squads, all Marine companies, and SOC have specialized water rescue equipment and training.

There are nearly 70 regular fire companies, engines & ladder companies, in additionto specialized units throughout the entire city that are cosiderto be water rescue companies. These companies receive additional training and specialized equipment. Throughout the year they will be assigned to a training site that will have a pool so thet they can maintain their skill levels. Not all of these companies are trained & equipped as a surf rescue. You would find most of the surf rescue companies in the Rockaway's (Batt 47) or Coney Is (Batt 43) areas because of the ocean front area they serve. Surf companies have a surf board attached to a several hundred foot rope.

As mentioned above, all rescues, squads, and marine companies are considered water rescue companies.

These units are provided with both winter and summer equipment which also covers ice rescues.

Due to recent storms, some fire companies in low lying areas have been assigned portable boats. Rescues & squads have been provided with inflatable rafts. Both TAC & the Marine Response Unit units carry a larger portable raft.

For example, L166 in the 43 Batt with their surfboard:

More than 20% of all companies are Water Rescue Units, not counting any Marine Units.

Current Water Rescue units are: 16 Engines, 58 Ladders, five Rescues, eight Squads, and two Tactical Support units. Six of the Engines and nine of the Ladders are further designated Surf Rescue units.

You have HM-1 list as a water rescue unit ….are you sure about that?

I’ve been to numerous water rescues …many in northern Queens and never seen or heard of HM-1 being assigned as a ”water rescue unit “. Just because they may have a zodiac, doesn’t mean there a water rescue unit.

Water Rescue Emergency Procedures documentation lists, in addition to a number of engines and ladders, the following SOC units: HazMat 1, and all rescues, squads, and marine companies.

I find that very hard to believe…. HM -1 isn’t even assigned on a phone alarm for a fire at their home box. The reason being …. They want HM available ..for only for Haz mat runs. So …I highly doubt they would be assigned to usually long duration water rescue runs.…especially seeing how Sq-288 would also be assigned to said incident. And , oh yea ….R-4 is right down the block too.

I don’t know if it’s a typo …or maybe to just up the numbers for federal funding or grants or something like that.

“Queens to Battalion 45 ….Haz-mat -1 will be your water rescue unit !” Said a dispatcher …..NEVER !!

Maybe it’s simply because they’re SOC. Even though they’d rarely, if ever, be the WRU, they’re under that category?

Did anyone think that Haz-Mat 1 might need a zodiac to try to stop a leak coming from a vessel or even to boom an area where a spill had occurred?

That’s exactly why they might have a zodiac boat ….having a zodiac doesn’t make them a WRU.

True, but they would have to be trained. The other reason to train them is that they can do OT in the Rescues or Squads. As far as dispatching them to an incident, I would do it as the last resort or if they had a verbal alarm.

Haz mat doesn’t get detail or hired to work OT in either the Rescues or the squads. But it does works the other way around ….all Resuce and squad members are trained to Haz Mat technician level . Haz met members are not trained to rescue tec , confined space , high angle , collapse , trench , rigging , and so on … but since they established the HTU engines , details or OT from the rescue or the squads to Haz mat or the HTU Engines are few and fare between.
