When Engine 15 was going to be the replacement engine for 17 after a decade without an active engine company at ladder 18, why was the opening for the original firehouse apparently getting too narrow for newer apparatus? I have been curious to figure it out.

15s quarters was very tight but the rig fit , they originally temporarily moved 15 to “repair” quarters and never returned. Building was sold to Henry street settlement a local non profit for one dollar.

I was a firefighter in tower Ladder 18 for 8 years. I often worked overtime or detail to Engine 15 when they were still on Henry St. Great old firehouse, but I always heard that when they were expanding the famous "Henry Street Settlement House", next to E-15 on Henry St. They somehow cracked the foundation of the firehouse. Yes, the door was narrow. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired.
