That's one of my favorite pre-arrival fire videos, bystander commentary notwithstanding. It really shows off the training and teamwork. The whole scene runs like a clock. Also, kudos to those construction guys at the start cleaning up the street and getting out the way.
...Fourth Alarm Dec 23 1998 around change of night tour into day tour... i was in BN*9....a number of the BROTHERS working that day were killed on 9-11 ...Continued Rest In Peace To All......also normally 1st Due LAD*35 was OOS to go to the Rock ....we BN*9 & several other Units had only returned to QTRS awhile before after a Fourth Alarm in the NFP Evans Hotel on 38 St.....something to take away from the McCauley Culkin Fire was as we entered the Lobby the Mother Patricia Brentrup was there soot covered ...the Concierge said "when you get to the 19 floor go LEFT " ....he not being familiar with our procedures was talking about a LEFT from the elevator but after hooking up on the floor below ENG*40 on coming out of the stair & going LEFT as he had said had the Fire at their back & when it got really hot they opened the line which actually hit the elevator doors flowed into the shaft & shorted out the elevator's with 54/4 & R*1 in them who got stuck & had to force their way out on a lower floor....ENG*40 Control Man managed to direct & pull out the Members back into the stairway as the Fire had roared down the hallway behind them....unfortunately the Fire also roared up the stair & killed 4 Civilians exiting from a few floors above....when i headed up i had brought a extra Scott Bottle w/me...the first 10 floors of the bldg were Commercial then the rest Residential (Yellow Standpipe Caps Outside)....from the reports from the FFs stuck in the elevators & ENG*40 giving Maydays & being burned i ordered a Second Alarm & started up the stairs however on reaching floor 10 there was a steel wire gate separating the Commercial from the Residential portion of the bldg. ....the Maydays were still coming in & i was frustrated as i had no tool to force the gate & the BKLYN Vandalia Ave Hi Rise Fire killing 3 FFs had just occurred & was definitely on my mind ....suddenly i heard a woman's heels coming down the stairs ...she opened the gate from her side & i used my extra Scott Bottle to chock the gate open for anyone else coming up....when i got to the Fire floor ENG*54 & LAD*4 had the Line & were moving it down the hallway which was super hot & had all the plaster off the concrete & concrete spalled in some areas....ENG*40 had initially flaked some Line up several steps before starting their advance as normal but when the Fire blew up the stairs it actually burned the outer jacket off in a few portions but luckily not bursting the Line...when we got to the extreme South end of the hallway we found there were 2 doors in the end corner one entering facing East & one entering facing South .....it turned out the Culkin's had 2 apartments made into one ....the heaviest Fire was coming from the door facing East upon entering...i was trying to radio DV*3 (a proby school classmate ADC Mike Giavannazo ) that it was 2 apts joined but my HT did not broadcast to the street from the end of the hallway (the old HTs ) either way 54/4 made the apts & as i thought we had it out & things were good LAD*24 Chauf Grover Casson RIP found the 4 Civilians in the stairway above & gave the report & started CPR....afterwards i noticed that both catty corner end hallway doors to the apt's had their doormats jammed in the hinge side of the doors keeping the doors wide open....later after returning to the lobby i asked the Mother (who RMA'd) about this & she said she did that before leaving "so the smoke could come out".....(later it was reported that there had been an electric heater in the wall behind a sofa that the kids had been stuffing candy wrappers into).4 truck said:McCauley caulkin fatal fire right around Xmas 1998 killed 4 in a high rise
