I read somewhere that the car was painted red because red shows better on black & white TV. BTW, "Car 54" series was shot entirely in the Bronx, even the indoor stuff that was done at the Biograph Film Studios at Southern Blvd & 175th St. The studio became a bus garage.

Interesting. Kind of like the movie, Marty, also shot on location in the Bronx. I actually visited that section of Arthur Ave. once when the main shot was filmed. There was a similar situation with the old Adventures of Superman, starring George Reeves. In the old black-and-whites, before they went to color, Superman's costume was actually a shade of gray because it showed up on camera better. I believe it took a while to get the exact shades of reds and blues once they went to color to determine which showed up better. In the first color season, it was darker, and in the second color season it was much, much lighter.

Anyhow, to get back to the topic at hand, it was a great show by the way! Fred Gwynne was great.

And also, anyone know why NYPD cars predating the mid-70's were green?
