Fire Billowing Out of Buildings

A square block along the Ocean Front at Averne, Queens, was doomed by fire as scores of firemen, answering a fire alarm call, battled the blaze. The Prince Hotel, most prominent building in this remarkable air view, is one of the oldest Hotels in the Rockaways and was once a gathering place for New York's society. It is believed that the blaze started here. The intense cold was responsible for the flames gathering so much headway. Paths had to be dug through the snow for the fire engines, while ice and freezing water mains hampered the smoke eaters in their work.

300-Room Frame Hotel Destroyed

Three hundred firemen working in zero weather battled a fire which destroyed the historic Prince Hotel containing three hundred rooms at Rockaway Beach Boulevard, Queens. Fire started near a small porch in the rear of the hotel about 7 a.m., January 28. Battalion Chief Daniel Sullivan, responding with the fire alarm companies, immediately ordered four more alarms. The wooden structure had a stucco facade and was unoccupied at the time.
