Anybody have any more information about this unit?  Where is it stationed, how's it transported, what is it used for?

The unit shown is neither EMS nor a Gator.  It is one of two 2004 Polaris Ranger 6x6 ATVs assigned to Engines 154 and 164 on Staten Island.  The units have multiple uses, including transportation for officers at special events, as the Manhattan photo illustrates.  The two Polaris units are transported by the same vehicles that transport the two MARC boats, also assigned to Engines 154 and 164.

Gators

In preparation for the expected larger than usual Milleneum New Years Eve gathering in Times Square, and the possibility of citywide Y2K computer and system failures, the city purchased several Gator carts from the John Deere Co. These 6 wheel diesel powered carts were much more adaptable than the Cushman?s, in that they could transport two crew members, as well patients who are seated or on backboards, from crowded and confined scenes. The Gators also came equipped with multiple wheel drive capabilities for added traction and maneuverability off road.

In the following years, the Gators were deployed for beach patrol at Coney Island and the Rockaways. They also saw service at the site of the World Trade Center collapse, transporting both the injured and the deceased off the pile.

These are the Polaris units:

KFD - You're correct.  I looked up the wrong data.  FDNY EMS has/had nine 1999 three-wheel Cushman motor scooters, and ten 1999, six-wheel, four-wheel-drive John Deere Gator units.  The photo is indeed one of the John Deere units.

They have one at the rock for use during the academy too. They take it on the runs when they go outside the gate.

Jim Griffiths in the Operational Manual (7th edition) states on p. 247:

"There are nine 1999 three wheel Cushman motor scooters, and ten 1999, six-wheel, four-wheel-drive Gator units.  They are put into service as BLS responder units for major crowd events e.g. NY Marathon, and along beeches when needed.  The Cushman units are staffed by one EMT.  The Gatores, manned by two EMT's, can transport patients in the supine or sitting position"

I think I also a couple of similar type units at the Marine Division and Marine 1.

Late one night, or should I say early one morning, a floater washed up on the beach at Coney. It was low tide at the time and getting a bus through the sand to the scene we went back to Station 43 (@ Coney Island Hosp.) and took back a "gator" to the beach. The DOA was placed on a longboard, lifted onto the "gator" and brought up to the boardwalk where the ambulance was positioned. It was much better than trying to carry the occupied longboard through the long stretch of beach. The "gators" are great and as previously said they were quite useful at WTC for the grim work that they had to do.
