With the FDNY exam one of the 5 extra points can come from being a veteran. Does this apply to mitary reserves or is it just active duty? Also if at time of exam you are still serving can you still receive the credit or only after you are honorably discharged?

Unless the law has changed recently, Reserve or National Guard ADT (Active Duty for Training) does not qualify one for "Veteran" status. ADT includes BCT, AIT, Annual Training, weekend drills. Activation for a deployment of 6 months or more (not necessarily to a war zone) I believe does confer veteran status but check that duration. Veteran status equals veterans points on the exam.

Unless there has been a change....to get Vet's Points for a NYC exam you have to have enlisted in New York State.

I'm not sure if that's right. I think showing you enlisted in New York City can count as Residency Credit, but I didn't think it mattered what state you enlisted in to get the Veteran's Credit.

Anyone who meets civil service veteran criteria gets veterans preference for fdny and nypd.  If home of record when enlisting is nyc, you also get city residency points.  Veterans also get application fee waived and service time deducted from age limit.  Disabled vets may get extra points with VA disability rating but could also get medically disqualified.

FDNY you vets are lucky, but you get what you earned and deserve, screw the wannabies. Back in Boston in the70's vets had preference I had 5 points for being WIA. Fucking liberal lawyers and judges did away with this preference but gave it to the minorities a few years later. Go figure.

JK, that was changed about 1988.  I worked with guys that were combat vets that were not NYS residents on entry or discharge from military, and ineligible for vets points.  Similarly in my case, not being a NYS resident I had not been eligible, but became eligible for my next promotional test (1990).  I also think you were only able to use your credit once, for open competitive or promotion, but not both.

However, some said that NYS residents that had been New York National Guardsmen and were activated for a day or two during a U.S. postal strike were eligible.  I can't swear that was true or just another "firehouse rumor."

I believe there were inclusive dates, as well as requirement that you had overseas service or something.  Of course, this may all have changed since we've had a few more wars since the 1960s.

There are now strict guidelines for veterans status.  Usually, a reservist or Nationl Guard member needs to deploy for 180+ days. Deployment into a combat zone less than 180 days may qualify, if WIA, for example.  A few days for storm duty does not qualify.
