Fireman Byrne died of the injuries he sustained when he was responding to a call, when he was crushed between the wall doors and the apparatus.


Fireman George L. Byrne of Engine 301 was killed when he was crushed between the apparatus door and the apparatus as it was leaving quarters. Engine 301 was responding by itself to a grass fire at Farmers Boulevard and Highbee Avenue when the accident happened. Fireman Byrne never regained consciousness and died on the operating table at Mary Immaculate Hospital. (From "The Last Alarm" by Boucher, Urbanowicz & Melahn, 2007)
