FDNY Frequencies

Does FDNY still use the 154 frequencies or are they strictly using the 800MHZ frequencies?
 
Are the 154 frequencies going to be shut off in time or are the 154 and 400MHZ going to simulcast for the foreseeable future?
 
They has until Jan 1, 2013 to shutdown VHF or go narrow band.  Being that we are moving to UHF narrowband already, plan on Dec 31 2012 as the last day. Can't see them running past that date.
 
Does this mean that the present older programables as well as crystal controlled will not receive FDNY after  1-1-13 ?
 
In order to receive the new 480 MHz FDNY transmissions your radio will have to have 6.25 kc channel spacing, that is programable to five decimals e.g. 482.00625 (Bronx).  Most current models have that;  most older ones and certainly all the crystal-controlled radios are historical relics.  If you get a new radio you would probably want one that also handles trunking systems in order to hear the on-scene multiple alarm tactical channel rebroadcasts on the 400 MHz trunk system.

  No Good Chief as HCO explained. I have a programmable scanner I bought just a few years ago. If I try to program all those numbers (like 482.00625 for the Bronx) it won't pick it up.  I think "Mikeindabronx" got himself one pretty cheap. Maybe he can help us out.
 
After 1-1-13 all VHF and UHF will have to be narrowband..

Some older radios with PL tones can pickup the newer stuff if you can find the right number to put in.  I have done this with a few radios but once the bands start filling up again that trick may not work as well.
 
Thanks for the info...another question ....will the old crystal controlled & the programables that cant take the new numbers be of use any where else in the U.S.?

  Yes, those radios can work fine in other areas  to monitor other fire and police depts etc. It will still pick up many depts in the NYC metro area.
 
Deano, I bought a portable GRE 500. But I cried because I paid over 500 bucks for it. Now I think they are down to around $400-$450. I bought it because Providence, RI was going digital. Its a nightmare to program for me because I'm no good with a computer. I actually had to pay somebody to program it for me.
  It does pick up the new FDNY channels but if it wasn't for the FDNY and Providence, I sure wouldn't have bought it. Its a lot of money and I think you have to be a part time brain surgen to be able to program it.
  Here's something else. I spend a lot of time in Bridgeport, Ct. One of my favorite channels to listen to was the Bridgeport Police. Now they just went to a thing called "digital encyrept". And NO scanner picks that up. At least the FDNY didn't do that (so far).
 
Grecom has a good line of receivers, easily programmed with available software.  Uniden's new "Home Patrol" has a bunch of features new to the scanner industry e.g. comes with all US public safety channels installed;  you delete the ones in your zip code or surrounding areas that you don't want.  Can be linked to a GPS and shifts area coverage as you drive.
 
At times I am just a dope but do a search on E-Bay. If you have qyestions the seller will usually answer

  Yes, you will be able to listen but only with certain scanners as mentioned above.

This is only for information. I only can listen via thebravst.com or at radioreference.com.
From Germany/Hamburg ist difficult to listen with a radio scanner  ;)
 
Of course you can, Schlobi!  Of course, it will be the Feuerwher, not the FDNY  ::) ::) ::)

Hey raybrag,

you're right, we also can linsten to Feuerwehr/ems and police radio with radio scanner, but only until 2013.
We will turn to digital TETRA and from than we can not listen.

Hamburg und Berlin allready changed.

So hope, that i can hear FDNY radio instead of our frequenies in the future.

You will have no problems with FDNY.  New system is  built and in use.
