MFA's were a scourge in Boston as well. "At box XXXX, nothing showing. Box wound, false, a 710." Best thing they did was switch the most chronic false alarm boxes to Voice boxes like FDNY did. And to this day the fire alarm boxes are still visible and in service!
We don't got Alarm Boxxes in North Jersey (at least I've never seen them). Though MFA's are almost some to zero in Irvington.

The voice boxes in FDNY did NOT solve the M.F.A. problem. As far as I know an F.D.N.Y. Engine Companys still respond if the "Alarm Button" is pushed, and no one says anything into the Emergency Response System box. It was always called an E.R.S. No Contact" response. With so many cell phones these days there is a lot less need for street E.R.S. Boxes. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired

As I stated previously Boston still has its fire alarm box system still in operation. Every now and then you will hear Engine 24, Ladder 23 respond to Box 1795. And occassionally you will hear over the radio receiving calls and boxes for 95 Normandy Street.

Capt. You are correct that the ERS boxes didn’t necessarily prevent or in some areas reduce the number of MFAs, The ERS boxes did reduce the number of runs for many companies. Once a BARS was was pulled, you got a 3/2 response. Once a BARS was replaced with an ERS box, a no contact got a single engine and often if the person at the ERS box was able to describe an ADV fire or rubbish fire, the response was appropriately scaled down, ultimately reducing many companies’ crazy number of runs. 7000, 8000, 9000 runs a year

Dead on brother. In reality, only a few times in my time in the job, did I arrive at ERS "no contact and find a serious fire or emergency. That said you never know. Recent FDNY, vehicle fires fought that extended to surrounding vehicles makes it necessary to fully check the area around the ERS no contact box. Cell phones can help the dispatcher to get additional information from other people about what going on. But my former unit Engine 26 responded to a ERS no Contact at 8th Ave. and W. 36th. and the very experienced officer was about to give a 10-92 when he discovered that a large fire existed in the rear of the building that he could not see due to the size and height of the building., the fire went to 6 Alarms. In midtown or anyplace else make sure you do a 360o evaluation of the building/s. Once again "you never know!"
