Captain James Cummings "A Towering FDNY Great"
Saturday, April 9, 2011 -  It is with heavy hearts that Watkins St anounces the death of Ret Capt Jim Cummings L176 (Lt L120; father of Lt Mike Cummings L157/FF L120). Captain Cummings was appointed on 6/16/1953 and assigned to L120 in 1966. He was an FDNY legend who recieved a Class 3 in 1969 and was also honored as Fireman of the Month 5/15/1961. An old school boss who led by strength of character - Capt Cummings now takes his tie clip (with all those unrecorded runs) to a higher place. He was a gentleman in the truest regard who loved his beloved Watkins St and Tin House. Capt Cummings was one of those special people who touched alot of people on this job and his presence will be felt long after he is gone. We proudly salute one of the pillars of Watkins Street.

From www.watkinsst.com......QUOTE.......A Triumphant Sendoff
Captain James J. Cummings was laid to rest following an emotional tribute for a true "giant" of the FDNY. Captain Cummings was an exemplary citizen serving his country with honor during WW2 and returned home to become the patriarch of L176 (hand-picked by the Chief of Dept) to become their very 1st Captain (following his stint at L120). Jim's father incidentally, was the 1st Captain of R-4 and his proud son Mike is a Lt at L157 -  for a now legendary firefighting family which has served NYC for the better part of this century. Captain Cummings led a group of men during an era in which history has shown - rewrote the definition of what it means to be a member of the FDNY.

Members of Watkins St, Tin House, and the Jolly Rogers proudly served as pall bearers as lines of uniformed members stood at attention giving one final salute to a beloved man who went the distance. Legendary Watkins Street firefighter, Seymore Schenker proudly donned the uniform to perform a beautiful rendition of Taps.

The entire Cummings Family and the Officers & Members of Watkins St, Tin House, and The Jolly Rogers would like to publicly thank Band Major (Capt Liam Flaherty R-2) and the members of the Emerald Society Pipes & Drums Band who turned out in force, volunteering their time, making sure this iconic figure was taken home in proper fashion. As the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 approaches, please take a moment to reflect upon the sacrifices members of The Band have made (and continue to make during every single WTC related death). These men represent the very best in the FDNY in terms of our history, our culture, our traditions, and the dedication we as members of the greatest job on earth have come to expect. To the entire FDNY Pipe Band - the aforementioned firehouses join the entire job in saluting each and every one of you and thank you for you  efforts.
