Searchlights
"Unlike many rigs with squad bodies of this type, Searchlight 21 did not have crew bench seats in the rear. FDNY Searchlight Units were manned by only one firefighter per tour. Rather, this rig has all of it's equipment cabinets located inside the rear body, giving the rig a streamlined appearance. SL 21 was originally assigned to Manhattan. SL 24 in Queens was disbanded in 1968, and Searchlights 22 and 23 were placed in permanent, unmanned reserve status in 1972, due to the City's fiscal crisis. From that point on, SL 21 was the only manned Searchlight Unit citywide, and was relocated to the quarters of Engine 260 in Long Island City, Queens, from which it responded until finally disbanded in 1990."
