PETE THE CAT might be OK just avoid FRITZ THE CAT .... a FF friend back in the day took his kids as well as some neighbors kids on an outing to the movies not knowing that it was not for little kids... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritz_the_Cat_(film)

I can highly recommend Firehouse from Nina Barbaresi. My daughter and myself we both love the book and read it nearly every day. I don't think you still can get it new, but you will find it without any problems on amazon or Abe books.
