I think E96 and TL54 have a pretty big 1st due area.

"Irons" I have to agree with that. I remember for a few years ago, Engine 96/Ladder 54 were number 1 for runs. One of their members explained to me that they were really so busy because they covered such a big area first due.

I believe another company that has a large first due area, and was always at the top, was Engine 290/Ladder 103. Of course the busy Brownville area also had a lot to do with it.

1st due response areas today are much smaller and more uniform because of the changes made in the past 40 years. New firehouses and units relocated to where there were once long distances between firehouses have pretty taken care of that. If you look at a map from before 1960 you'll see companies in more populated areas that had long runs into what were then lightly populated areas. Before L54 there was the large Soundview area where L31, L41, L47, L48 & L50 had to cover. Before L174 there was another large area that had to be covered by L113, 120, 123, 147, 157 & 170. Before L172 there was a big space that was covered by L148, 149, 153, 156 & 168. And there was a "No-Man's-Land" right in the center of eastern Queens before the "Big House" in Jamaica was broken up and L152 moved south from Bayside to Utopia & the LIE. Ladders 125, 127, 129, 150, 151, 162 & 167  used to respond 1st or 2nd due all the way into that area.

evn today 96/54 still have a big chunk to cover 1st due, however i think the biggest 1st due might belong to 38/51.  although the area that 96/54 cover 1st due is from the moat (end of story/bronx river rd) by the hunts point bridge to the end of soundview ave, along with the bruckner blvd to E174st (although some of those are 2nd due) the area they cover with 1st, 2nd and 3rd due is pretty decent.. but like i said that 15th batt has a huge area..

Now for the Bronx - this info is a few years old for the trucks: It does not include L-39's move.

Largest 1st due area: L-50  total 301 boxes
2nd place L-51 with 181 boxes
3rd place L-61 with 175 boxes
4th place L-41 with 165 boxes
5th place L-47 with 163 boxes

Now 2nd due on the 1st Alarm are:
1st place - L-47 with 429 boxes
2nd place - L-51 with 277 boxes
3rd place - L-61 with 183 boxes
4th place - L-46 with 153 boxes
5th place - L-32 with 152 boxes

NOW TOTAL 1st ALARM
1st place - L-47 with 592 boxes
2nd place - L-51 with 458 boxes
3rd place - L-50 with 390 boxes
4th place - L-61 with 358 boxes
5th place - L-32 with 281 boxes

Now about L-54 - they only have 159 first due & 70 second due boxes for a total of 229 boxes
In the West Bronx L-46 has the biggest fisrt alarm area with (93/153) 246 boxes
In the South Bronx L-42 has the biggest first alarm area with (84?128) total of 212 boxes

When you think about a truck's area, see how many adjacant fire houses only have an engine in them.
A good example of this is Ladder 50. Lad 54 has all of the surrounding stations housing both eng & trucks
that is why there numbers are not that high.
