Foam Units

Do the foam units carry any water? Is the foam tanker still in use and how often would it go on a box? Are any of them manned? Thank you
 
The Foam Units are unmanned, but cross staffed by the members of the company they are either quartered with, or the respective back ups. The Foam Tender is still in service at E-238, and is dispatched on any request for foam citywide. Best guess would be 2-3 times yearly, tops. The Foam Carriers carry 1,000 gallons of Foam Concentrate, no water. The Foam Tender carries either 2,000 or 3,000. I honestly forgot.
 
Tender has 3000 in three 1000 tanks.

Each Engine that has a foam unit, will have 2 ECC's working the tour.
 
A foam carrier, with its associated engine, is assigned only on the JFK and LGA airport boxes.

A 10-86 (Fluoroprotein) signal gets two foam carriers, the foam tender, two Purple-K units, and a satellite wagon, all with associated engines.

A 10-87 (Hi-Expansion) incident calls for three foam carriers and a satellite, plus the parent or backup engines.

Two battalion chiefs are assigned as foam coordinators in both instances.  The Department is switching to alcohol resistant foam, although only two of the ten foam carriers have changed over.

they will also go to calls like if a tanker spills and it has a possibilty of catching fire

10-87 was discontinued. You forgot the Foam Coordinator trained Battalion Chiefs. And there is at least one other Box a Foam Unit is assigned to. Visy Paper in SI.
 
Thanks, I stand reminded of SI box 8132, Visy Paper.  Foam Carrier 154 is assigned if Engine 154 is in quarters to take it;  no backup is designated.

The Hi-Ex unit was deactivated, however, the 10-87 signal remains in the system.  The response was changed, as shown above, when the Hi-Ex unit and its 15000 CFM generator went out of service.  The Department now depends on satellites and foam carriers with their 7500 CFM Spamco generators to deliver high-expansion foam.

Re fluoroprotein foam:  consider it ?basic" foam.  Fluoropolydol alcohol resistant foam is a form of fluoroprotein foam with a couple of unique characteristics:  it is resistant to breaking down when applied to water soluble or alcohol based materials, and it can be applied to hydrocarbons at half the concentration of basic fluoroprotein foam.

I thought that there were only four new Foam Carriers  and the Foam Tender at 238.  You mention foam carriers.  Please explain and list them.
 
Five 2015 Freightliner/Seagrave 1500 gallon ?foam tankers? are in service replacing the ten former ?foam carriers.? Each has a backup transport (in parentheses): Engines 96 (73), 152 (161), 167 (162), 247 (321), 260 (299). The 3000 gallon 1992 Mack/Saulsbury foam tender is at E-238, backup is E-325.

Each of 19 foam depots has 50 five-gallon cans of AR-AFFF, five cans of Hi-Ex, and smaller quantities of AFFF. Five depots (Engines 96, 152, 238, 260, and 321) have, in addition, variable numbers of 55-gallon AR-AFFF drums and 25 GPM electric pumps for refilling tankers.
 
Depots are at: Manhattan E 1-5-9-95, Bx 72 and 96, SI 152, 154, 158, 167, Bkn 206, 207, 238, 284, 321, andQuens 260, 262, 294, 324. Info from Ops Ref, edit if needed please.
