"It is with deep regret that the Department announces the death of former Fire Commissioner, Charles Joseph Hynes, which occurred on January 29, 2019. Hynes was born and raised in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. He attended St. Ann's Academy in Manhattan (now Archbishop Molloy High School), and received both his bachelor's degree, in 1957, and his J.D. in 1961 from St. John's University in Jamaica, Queens. Hynes was appointed the 24th New York City Fire Commissioner by Mayor Edward I. Koch on November 5, 1980 upon the resignation of Augustus A. Beekman. Hynes served in that position until his resignation on October 22, 1982. "It is a sad day for the FDNY and New York City," said current Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro. "Former Fire Commissioner Hynes, a true New Yorker, served this Department and city with great honor and pride. He will be missed."
Rest in Peace Commissioner Hynes. Thoughts and prayers for your family
