The Hartford, Ct mayor has a number of proposals to cut the fire dept. Very similar to what the Providence, RI mayor has done (illegally) to that city's firefighters. That story is also posted on this site called "Providence Fire Dept in Chaos" - http://nycfire.net/forums/index.php/topic,39962.0.html
According to the Hartford Courant Newspaper of May 12, 2016, the Hartford Mayor is proposing the following in an effort to cut cost.
1) Increase firefighters weekly work schedule from 42 hours to a 56 hour work week. A 33 % INCREASE with no increase in pay.
2) No insurance coverage after age 65 for retired firefighters.
3) The closing of two fire companies. I believe the Hartford FD now has 10 Engines, 5 Ladders, 1 Rescue. The department currently has 294 firefighters.
Already more than 50 of the more senior experienced firefighters have put in their retirement papers, including 8 Deputy Chiefs. This is very similar to what happened to their Brother Firefighters in Providence.
The Hartford Chief of Department expects a total of 80-90 to retire.
